Learning Disabilities Program at Westfield State

Westfield State University makes every effort to provide an enriching educational experience for qualified students with learning disabilities in the Banacos Academic Center. Since 1979, the Learning Disabilities Program has had a distinguished record of success in providing free, comprehensive academic support to undergraduate students with learning disabilities or ADHD.

SAT and Foreign Language Waivers

Massachusetts state law (M.G.L. Chapter 15A, Sec. 30) allows students with documented learning disabilities to waive SAT scores. While Westfield State is SAT optional, submitting documentation of a learning disability ensures students receive the full benefit of this waiver under state law.

In addition, the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education permits the substitution of two college preparatory electives in place of the two required foreign language courses.

Although disclosure of a learning disability is not required, first-year applicants who wish to receive the SAT and/or foreign language waiver, special consideration during the admission process, and comprehensive academic support after enrollment must submit complete diagnostic testing (a psycho-educational assessment).

Diagnostic Testing Requirements

Diagnostic testing should include both a cognitive and an achievement test, and must have been administered within the last three years. Preferred tests include:

  • WAIS-III or WAIS-IV (cognitive tests) together with any achievement test used by your school system,
    OR
  • The complete Woodcock Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery (includes both cognitive and achievement tests)

All diagnostic materials will be kept confidential and used only under the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Admissions Consideration

Applicants who submit the following will receive preferential review:

  • A reflective personal statement
  • Two academic recommendations

Applicants are also strongly encouraged to submit their most recent IEP or 504 plan. First-year applicants may be required to interview with the staff of the Learning Disabilities Program.

Waiver-Only Option

Students with documented learning disabilities who do not want to be considered for Westfield’s Learning Disabilities Program may still apply through the general admission process and request the SAT and/or foreign language waiver.

To do so, applicants must submit a complete copy of diagnostic testing (psycho-educational assessment) as described above.
